Mystery + Magic: Gentle Somatic Yoga

Awakening our greatest potential for health.

I’ve always believed in the body’s ability to heal itself, or self correct, if given the right environment. The right environment might look like a physical space that is calm and peaceful, supportive of the healing journey. It could be a mental space that is free from resounding anxiety, negative self talk and beliefs. It could be filling our bodies with the nourishment of healthy foods that fill our cells with vitality. Often times, it’s a combination of all of these things. I strive to achieve this balance in my own life, remembering that life is a process not perfection (#perfectionisboring). Finding this balance always involves a little bit of mystery and a little bit of magic. And my intentions are always to create the most supportive, nourishing environment for my students to be in as they are on their journey to their highest well being (or at least to coping with a stressful day or finding more restful sleep at night).

I am constantly immersing myself in body/mind practices that encourage this deeper awareness and help us to reconnect to really simple, practical ways to navigate the stressors of an increasingly chaotic world and awaken the deeper wonders and joy that are within and around us. I get really excited when I find a practice that fills me with a Whole Body YES! Gentle Somatic Yoga is this YES!

What is Gentle Somatic Yoga?

Gentle Somatic Yoga® (GSY) is a unique “art of movement” practice that combines traditional yoga postures, Hanna Somatic Education, breathing techniques and healing visualizations. By incorporating slow, mindful movements that raise bodily awareness to release tension-based patterns in the body, GSY meets you where you are currently and gently guides you into greater states of inner peace and joy.

Instead of traditional stretching, GSY utilizes brain-to-muscle re-education to reprogram muscles. The self-corrective and therapeutic exercises, called Somatic Movement Flows®, are ideal for overcoming bodily pain, dramatically increasing flexibility, and reversing postural imbalances. It is through these movement explorations and re-patterning that we are better able to access the deeper wisdom, creativity, vitality, joy and well being that is innately within us.

GSY was created by James Knight and informed by the work of important movement educators such as Eleanor Criswell Hanna, Thomas Hanna, Moshe Feldenkrais, Lawrence Gold, and Tom Myers.
